Let's take a look at past tense.
Present: です
Past: でした
Instead of "す" you put "した".
That's it ._.
Example: りんご でした。
It was an apple.
This was too little so I'll expand the info. If we join the negative and the past, we get the negative form of the past :D
じゃありません + でした = じゃありませんでした
This is just so simple to be true.... Well it is true! ^^
Example: りんご じゃありませんでした。
